Some companies focus too much on design, and the manufacturing side tends to suffer. Other companies focus more on manufacturing, at the expense of design. And if the focus is on both design and manufacture, sales proposals and after-sales service tend to suffer. But at AREA, they have managed to achieve the ideal balance of all three.

AREA Tokyo creates furniture with reverence for the ancient culture, aesthetics, and philosophies of Japan. We use beautiful materials, timeless craft, and elaborate designs both traditional and modern. We hope that our carefully crafted pieces will help you fill your home with love.
This new cabinet in charcoal, specially created for our Paris store, features a “Brahma” door design, which is popular in Japan. The pictured wind god/thunder god is a Japanese god that helps the good and punishes the bad. The image represents an appeal to become someone who benefits the world.
Enclosed by four independent pillars, this beautiful living room cabinet was designed to evoke the look of a floating box. The door image is by master kimono artist J otaro Saito, who has here made use of techniques handed down through the ages in the temples of Kyoto.
This living room cabinet utilizes Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji—two famous Japanese temples built in the medieval period—as design motifs. It features through-pillars and a raised-floor, “three-story” structure. This work exudes a very distinctive and dignified tranquility.
This work too was created exclusively for the Paris store. Its appearance, like an interwoven building, is grand in style, and has a surprisingly delicate balance. Despite being an item of furniture, it also works as an objet d’art.
When watching snow falling in the garden from inside a warm room, rather than opening the shoji door, someone might gently slide up the shoji to reveal a sliver of space to appreciate the view. This work was designed by trying to imbue a collection cabinet with this kind of refined Japanese aesthetic sensibility.
These shelves express the vision of a beautiful autumn sky, with the soft touch of wind on the cheeks and the sight of slender clouds hanging in the sky. Two shelves overlapping at its center represent clouds. Processing chestnut trees using ancient Japanese techniques conjures up the philosophy of wabi-sabi—that all things in this world eventually pass away.
This work depicts the world we live in and the world after death, along with the subtle and profound world that lies between the two. When you look into this world slightly, the question arises— who am I ? How can I find happiness here and now ? What is the true meaning of life ? These are the thoughts that arise.
A table made from large trees that have lived, staring at the world, far longer than any person alive. The lines of grain that have endured so many long years of wind and snow are dramatic, and almost defy human understanding. The legs made of rectangular boards and thick round rods further this world view.
A table featuring symmetrically cut raw timber of very old trees. The symmetry with slight difference across the brass dividing line breathes the vitality of life into the piece. The straight legs are inspired by the design of Japanese temples.
This is like a Japanese version of the Windsor chair. The straight strucrure modeled after a torii shrine gate results in a graceful standing figure, and when multiple chairs are lined up, the top rails neatly align to create a pleasant sense of special tension. This is the kind of chair that effortlessly corrects posrure.
This dining chair follows a Nordic design, but also offers a hint of Japanese minimalism. The top rail and excellent backrest make this chair very comfortable to sit in, but also give it the presence of a design icon. This piece is made in Hida Takayama, a village renowned for Japanese woodworking mastery.
The rear legs of this chair, which stick out defiantly, call to mind the horns of an ogre. A striking feature is the extension of the seat surface up the back some way to support the waist. Even a single piece of this work conveys a complete worldview. This chair is unique but also attracts people's hearts.
This floor stand was inspired by bonbori, traditional Japanese paper-covered lanterns. The base is made of stone, wood, and brass, while the hexagonal lamp shades creates a traditional softness and contemporary beauty in the space.
